Research
suggests that the stomachs of children with a history of colic may
remain sensitive for many more months, and the juice you feed them
may cause many of the symptoms of colic to return.
The research
showed that infants with a history of colic are particularly
sensitive to what kind of juice they drink. This study found
infants with a history of colic who were fed apple juice
experienced more crying and restlessness, and slept significantly
less, as compared with infants fed white grape juice.
As previous
research has shown, young infants have difficulty digesting apple
juice because of presence of sorbitol and the imbalance of basic
sugars in the juice. It makes sense, say the authors of the
research, that those who have had colic would be even more
sensitive to these factors.
Based on what
the science is telling us, when it is time to introduce juice to
infants, whether the infant has had colic or not, white grape
juice is easier to digest.
