grape juice in the news!
In new research study,
white grape juice was less likely to cause recurrence of diarrhea in infants
and toddlers than apple or pear juice.
(Released March, 2002) |
In a
first-of-its-kind study published in this month’s issue of The
Journal of Pediatrics, researchers found that white grape
juice was well tolerated by young children recovering from
diarrhea—far better, in fact, than either apple or pear juice.

This is the first study ever to look at how children recovering
from diarrhea respond to common fruit juices. The researchers
found that children recovering from diarrhea who drank apple or
pear juice produced three to four times more diarrhea as those who
drank white grape juice.
What does this study show us?
It shows that a juice with the right combination of carbohydrates
and, which contains no sorbitol—like white grape juice—is well
tolerated and an excellent adjunct to water and certain foods
during recovery.
Researchers offer three tips for parents of children with
diarrhea:
1. Control diarrhea and rehydrate in consultation with your
pediatrician
2. During recovery, water can be supplemented with white grape
juice
3. If diarrhea returns, consult your pediatrician
